Migration and Pandemics – Spaces of Solidarity and Spaces of Exception is a research work by Anna Triandafyllidou about the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic on migration.

Anna Triandafyllidou holds the Canada Excellence Research Chair in Migration and Integration at Ryerson University, Toronto, as of August 2019. She was previ- ously Robert Schuman Chair at the Global Governance Programme of the European University Institute (Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies, 2012–2019) where she directed the Cultural Pluralism Research Area.

Covid-19 and borders

Border closures and selective openings have raised important questions about the notion of membership, solidarity, and responsibility, asking whether this pandemic opens up possibilities for a new under- standing of citizenship or of membership to a political community that is post- national.

The Purpose

The research tries to answer two important questions:

  • how we should understand migration and membership in pandemic times?

  • how we should (re-)organise the governance of migration during and after the pandemic?
