The IMPACT Erasmus+ project has successfully completed its International Training Workshop, held in Charleroi, Belgium, from 3 to 5 February 2026. The event brought together around 30 participants from six European partner organizations, including teachers, youth workers, and social workers, all committed to addressing the links between climate change and migration in educational and social contexts.
Where and who? The workshop was hosted at Collège Saint-Michel and organized by the Belgian partner Servicius ASBL. Participants came from across Europe, representing the full network of IMPACT project partners, and worked together over three days to strengthen their skills and methodologies.
What was the focus? The training centered on two core themes: raising awareness of climate change as a driver of migration, and promoting social and climate justice through education. The programme prioritized exchange of best practices, collaborative learning, and the development of innovative, learner-centered approaches.
What did participants do? The workshop featured a rich mix of interactive and experiential activities, including role-play simulations on the experiences of climate migrants, migration journey mapping, game-based learning exploring the “climate domino effect”, data analysis on climate and migration trends, visual storytelling through PhotoVoice, and structured debates on policy and ethical dilemmas related to climate-induced migration
Beyond the classroom Participants also took part in two highly relevant educational visits: the Fedasil Reception Centre for asylum seekers and the European Parliament in Brussels. These visits provided direct insight into European migration policies and the real-world implications of climate-driven displacement.
Why does it matter? This workshop marked a key milestone for the IMPACT project, strengthening transnational cooperation among partners and reinforcing the role of education in building critical thinking, empathy, and active citizenship in response to global challenges.
The IMPACT project — approved by AEF – Europe, the Belgian National Agency — continues to grow its European network, empowering educators and learners to better understand and respond to the complex relationship between climate change and migration.
